Whenever a computer starts to run slowly, one of the first things we do is open the task manager and look for whatever is using up our RAM or processing power. This is where Windows Process Heat Map comes in to highlight those memory-consuming processes. It works like a hard drive memory usage monitor and it is quite easy to use.

Windows Process Heat Map is distributed as a freeware application, for Windows 7 and 8 and for the 2008 and 2012 Server editions. It provides full support for both 32 and 64-bit operating systems and it comes in a small package, so you can install it quickly.

There is not much you can do on the software's interface, but the information you can find is quite useful. Like the standard task manager, Windows Process Heat Map shows all running processes in a tree structure, along with their used memory and processing power. Additionally, the software presents all running processes as rectangles of varying sizes, according to their resource usage. Also, the processes are color-coded, to highlight those that use a large amount of memory.

The processes list can be refreshed manually, with a single click or automatically, with a frequency of 1 to 60 minutes. The interesting part about Windows Process Heat Map is that it works with servers as well. When launched, the application will display a dialog on which you can select your local host or a server and specify its username and password.

Pros

The software makes it easy to figure out which process is using up most of your memory. The information is presented as clearly as possible in a color-coded heat map. Furthermore, the application is free and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

The software doesn't come with any options for shutting down the listed processes. If hunting down memory-draining processes is part of your daily routine, then Windows Process Heat Map will make your life significantly easier.
